You would usually need at least one of the following:
- a relevant BTEC Level 3 profile of Merit/Merit
- DD at A Level
- DE grades at A Level plus C in Welsh Baccalaureate
- completed an Access to HE course where you have achieved a Pass Diploma with 45 Passes
Plus: GCSE passes in three subjects at grade C or above to include Maths and English Language (or equivalent).
Additionally, you should be working in, or have access to, a placement in an appropriate setting to enable you to complete the work based practice requirements.
In a nutshell
You’ll study the professional aspects of working in childcare, from communication with colleagues to legislation and children's rights. You’ll learn all aspects of childhood, from children's health and development to education and play.

What will I be doing?
This course will give you the skills, knowledge and experience you’ll need to successfully work with children of all ages. You’ll also develop personal qualities such as flexibility and motivation which are invaluable in the workplace and for further study.
You will be assessed through a range of assignments and practical activities observed in your environment.
What is expected of me?
To enrol on this course, you’ll need a minimum of 3 GCSEs, Grade C or above, (including Maths and English Language or equivalent) and usually at least one of the following:
- A relevant BTEC/ CACHE Level 3 profile of Merit/Merit
- DD at A Level
- DE Grades at A Level plus C in Welsh Baccalaureate
- Access to HE where you have achieved a Pass Diploma with 45 Passes
You’ll need to secure 300 hours of work placement, which can be either as a volunteer or paid employment.
You’ll be expected to commit to at least 20 hours of independent study time at key points in the year.
You will attend college for 1 afternoon per week.
Industry experience will also be taken into account.
What comes next?
With the skills and experience that you develop on this course, you can work in a range of childcare areas.
After successful completion of the foundation degree, you can automatically progress onto the final year of the BSc (Hons) in Childhood Studies at the University of South Wales.
Learners at the Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone have the additional option to study for the City & Guilds Level 5 Diploma in Working with Children and People qualification, which is required for sector skills recognition in this area.
