Fighting for Stage and Screen
In a nutshell
In an exciting partnership with the British Academy of Stage and Screen Combat (BASSC), this course gives you the chance to take your first steps into unarmed combat for stage and screen, culminating with a fight performance test.
This course is for...
…anyone looking at a career as a performer on stage or screen.
Combat is rapidly becoming a staple skill for today's performers, with greater involvement from actors in fight and action scenes as seen in series such as Vikings, Game of Thrones and Beowulf and films such as Thor, Captain America and Dunkirk.
Under the expert tuition of Sam Kahn of the BASSC, over the ten weekly sessions and one week of intense classes you’ll explore a variety of unarmed combat techniques for live performance and camera work. Sessions are highly physical and involve a high degree of contact.
In detail you’ll study:
- Out of distance strikes
- Contact strikes
- Victim control
- Controlled descent
- Vocal reactions to pain
These techniques will then be utilised to perform a fight within a scene for the BASSC unarmed fight proficiency test, resulting in an industry and worldwide-recognised qualification. You’ll need to make sure you’re available for the exam (a time slot will be allocated).
The British Academy of Stage and Screen combat is renowned for its stage and screen combat training and internationally-respected for its high standard of technique, curriculum and focus on performance, with BASSC staff teaching at RADA, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the International School of Screen Acting amongst others.
As well as giving you vital extra skills and building your CV as a performer, studying unarmed combat improves your confidence and body awareness and gives you the chance to progress to further graded examinations or proficiency in weaponry.
There are no formal requirements – everyone from beginner to expert should be able to complete the course, picking up vital skills and having fun along the way!
The workshops will be physically demanding so a certain level of physical fitness/ability is needed. We can adapt classes and techniques if you have specific physical requirements (just contact us before booking so that we can make any necessary preparations). You’ll need to wear movement clothing for all classes such as tracksuit trousers, combats or leggings, t-shirt/sweatshirt type tops and trainers or light Boots – essentially, anything suitable for dance or gym wear, possibly with a slight military aspect. The course takes place on Tuesday evenings from 6pm-9pm and costs £265.
