In a nutshell

This is a dynamic, engaging and interesting course into the world of music technology

This course is for you if...

... You have an interest in music
... You want to learn more about composition, production and recording
... You want a blend of practical and theoretical study

What will I be doing?

You’ll develop your expertise through three main areas of study:

  • Popular music styles since 1910
  • The development of technology-based music
  • The principles and practice of music technology

You'll make use of our digital recording studios and computer-based sequencing workstations.

At AS Level, you’ll develop skills in computer-based MIDI and audio sequencing, culminating in the creation of a popular music track chosen by the examination board. Two units are studied at AS Level:

  • Music technology portfolio 1, including sequencing, arranging and multi-track recording
  • Listening and analysis (popular music 1900 to the present day)

You’ll learn to operate the equipment used in multi-track recording (microphones, mixing desks, effects and dynamics processors, audio recorders) and how to undertake a recording from its outset through to the creation of the final master recording.

In addition, A2 study includes composing for film and a more detailed study of audio sequencing, as well as two additional units:

  • Music technology portfolio 2, including production, composition and multi-track recording
  • Analysing and production

Assessment is based on practical coursework tasks and an exam in both the AS and A2 year. Upon completion, you’ll gain:

  • AS Level Music Technology
  • A Level Music Technology
  • Skills activities
  • English and Maths
