What will I be doing?
This is a practical, work-related course assessed by a series of projects and assignments set, marked and graded by your course tutors. It is equivalent to three A Levels and is recognised by many universities and employers. All units are internally assessed, and a final grade is awarded at the end of the course.
You’ll study 19 units over two years, which cover a broad range of scientific topics: There are 6 core units which must be completed:
- Fundamentals of science
- Working in the science industry
- Scientific investigations
- Scientific practical techniques
- Perceptions of science
- Using mathematical tools in science
You’ll also study 13 of the 26 specialist units (subject to change), including:
- Energy changes, sources and applications
- Biochemistry and biochemical techniques
- Physiology of human regulation and reproduction
- Chemical laboratory techniques
- Genetics and genetic engineering
- Industrial applications of organic chemistry
All units are internally assessed, and a final grade is awarded at the end of the course. You’ll achieve:
What is expected of me?
To enrol, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs grade C or above to include a science subject and Maths/Maths Numeracy or English/Welsh First Language; or appropriate Level 2 Diploma qualification at Merit grade with GCSEs to include Maths/Numeracy, English/Welsh First Language at grade C or above.
Full commitment to attendance is required. Respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation are the essential qualities we expect to see in all our learners. You’ll be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you will continue your studies and coursework during your own time.
What comes next?
Second year of Extended Diploma subject to successful completion of 90-credit Diploma.
Successful completion of the second year could lead to progression to a HND or degree courses in science or biomedical sciences.
Career opportunities working in science and manufacturing laboratories.
