This is a preparatory course for university and requires a high level of commitment. We review every application carefully on an individual basis and therefore require applicants to attend an interview. For entry, you will need to demonstrate good interpersonal skills, commitment to the area of study and enthusiasm and understanding of your chosen career route. You will also need a GCSE Grade A* - C (or equivalent skills) in English Language or Mathematics.

Learners need to have been out of full-time education for at least three years prior to studying this course. As the course is designed for those with life experience, it is not usually suitable for applicants aged under 19 years.

What will I be doing?

This Access to Higher Education Diploma is ideal if you want to start a university course but have no formal qualifications. By successfully completing an Access to Higher Education Diploma you will find that many universities will welcome you aboard to further your higher education by means of a degree course.

Units include:

  • Sociology
  • Physical science
  • Biological science
  • Health and hygiene studies
  • Psychology
  • Communications skills (including keeping a reflective journal)
  • Numerical skills
  • Information technology

There are no formal examinations but you will be continually assessed through assignments, tests, oral presentations, practical tasks and an extended essay. On completion, you’ll achieve the Access Diploma in Nursing and Health Care Studies.

Full commitment to attendance is required. Respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation are the essential qualities we expect to see in all our learners. You will be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you will continue your studies and coursework in your own time. All assignments must be successfully completed in order to achieve the qualification.
