In a nutshell

Our HNC's Level 4 in Engineering are designed in consultation with industry; and intended to link to local industry as much as possible, both in its content and in the mode of attendance.

The aim is to produce a highly qualified and knowledgeable engineer who can meet the requirements of industry. This is a specialist vocational programme with a strong work related emphasis.

Our Engineering HNC courses provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector. Nationally recognised by employers, the course also allows for further study at degree level and beyond.

This course is available as part of a Personal Learning Account (PLA). PLA is an initiative from the Welsh Government which offers people the chance to access free, part-time courses with flexible and convenient learning that fits around their existing lifestyle (subject to eligibility).

... anyone aged 19+, living in Wales, employed and earning less than £30,596 per year.

… everyone who is looking to take the next step in their career in the Engineering sector.

Course content

The course provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector.

You will study units including:

Year 1

  • Engineering science
  • Electrical principles
  • Engineering mathematics
  • Engineering design

Year 2

  • Robotics and PLC's
  • Industrial project
  • Electrical machines
  • Analogue and digital systems

You will learn through a mixture of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions.

Learners will be assessed via coursework and examination.

Entry Requirements

You would usually need at least one of the following:

  • A relevant BTEC Level 3 profile of Merit/Merit
  • CC at A Level
  • CC grades at A Level plus C in Welsh Baccalaureate

Plus: GCSE passes in three subjects at grade C or above to include Maths and English Language (or equivalent).

Mature students with relevant industry experience who do not meet the academic qualifications will be considered individually via interview.

Additional information

You can progress onto a HND Engineering or a related Foundation Degree.

Employment opportunities can be found in a wide range of organisations from multinational firms to local companies. There are many exciting career options including:

  • manufacturing systems engineer

You will attend college eight hours per week, 30 weeks per year.
