In a nutshell
Ideal for anyone working in engineering or manufacturing, this one-year, part-time national vocational qualification (NVQ) course will give you the skills and knowledge needed to do the job, and the ability to organise work and identify and prevent problems.
This course is for...
…anyone wanting to prepare for an Apprenticeship in engineering. …those working in engineering who want to learn new skills to help progress their career.
Course content
You’ll need to have a good understanding of basic engineering with an aptitude for practical skills using hand tools and engineering machinery, as well as being fully committed to attendance and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Using a combination of practical workshop sessions, demonstrations and classroom portfolio sessions, you’ll learn practical skills through workshop practice and the topics you’ll cover include:
- Working safely in an engineering environment
- Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively
- Using and communicating technical information
- Producing components using hand fitting techniques
- Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
- Preparing and using milling machines
There’s no exam but the work you produce is assessed before you’re awarded the Level 2 Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations, after which you could progress onto an appropriate Level 2, or in some cases, Level 3 qualification in Mechanical / Manufacturing Engineering. You could also progress into an Apprenticeship or employment in the engineering sector.
Entry Requirements
You’ll need a good level of general education including a C in English or Welsh Language and a C in Maths, or to have successfully completed an appropriate Level 2 qualification with a Merit profile. More mature learners will be considered based on entry qualifications and/or your experience.
Additional information
You’ll need to provide your own safety boots/shoes, overalls and safety glasses, and your own stationery e.g. folders, subject dividers, pens, pencils, colouring pencils, compass and ruler.
