In a nutshell
If you want a career as a barber, this course is designed as a fast-track way to gain both Level 1 and Level 2 certificates over one year. You'll develop skills in cutting men's hair and gain an understanding of barbering techniques, services and equipment.
This course is for...
…anyone with experience of cutting men's hair …experienced hairdressers who need to gain qualifications to further their career …anyone looking to change careers.
The course is run over 15 hours a week, and covers basic techniques including:
- Consultation to identify clients' needs
- Developing cutting/clipper techniques to achieve the desired look
- Use of products and equipment
- Health and safety in the salon
- Providing suitable aftercare service
You’ll need to be self-motivated, hardworking, have respect for others and an enthusiasm for the subject. Once you’ve completed the course, you’ll be able to progress on to NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing if you wish.
A minimum of 3 GCSEs grade G or above to include: Maths/Numeracy and English/Welsh Language or an appropriate Entry Level qualification. Applicants without the minimum GCSEs will be considered based on previous experience or other qualifications.
You’ll need to pay awarding body registration fees of approximately £53.00 and buy a barbering kit costing around £200.00.
To reflect industry expectations, you will be required to wear a Coleg Gwent salon uniform. The college will fund the cost of one full uniform per year. Additional sets can be purchased for around £45 (TBC); college staff will be able to direct you to the approved supplier if / when needed.
