What will I be doing?
The hairdressing sector is fast moving and there will be opportunities to learn new skills during and after your training.
You’ll learn about:
- Client consultations
- Reception skills
- Shampooing
- Blow drying
- Setting
- Colouring
- Cutting
- Perming
- Promoting products and services
- Hair/scalp treatments.
The course is delivered through a combination of:
- Theory classes
- Practical workshops
- Real salon environments at the college
- Commercial sessions
- Demonstrations
- Group work
- Work placement - either weekly or on block
You’ll also have the opportunity to engage in:
- Industry talks from experts in the field of hairdressing
- In house competitions and the opportunity to enter Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales and UK/World Skills competitions
- Industry interviews
You’ll be assessed through practical and written assignments, online tests, portfolios, successful work placements and client feedback. Upon successful completion, you’ll gain:
- NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing
- Appropriate supporting qualifications to broaden your skill set and meet the needs of industry
- Creative Enrichment Skills (community activities and demonstrations)
What is expected of me?
You will need to be self-motivated, hard-working, resourceful and have a friendly personality. You will be expected to attend a work placement as part of your programme. It will all be provided on campus and there will be one night a week where you will be in college until late.
What comes next?
Upon completion, you can progress onto Level 3 Hairdressing or employment.
Additional information
You’ll be expected to purchase a hairdressing kit as a condition of your place on the course. The cost of this is approximately £70- £96.
To reflect industry expectations, you will be required to wear a Coleg Gwent salon uniform. The college will fund the cost of one full uniform per year. Additional sets can be purchased for around £45 (TBC); college staff will be able to direct you to the approved supplier if / when needed.
