In a nutshell
If you’re following a career in engineering, this two year, part-time course will help you gain the knowledge and understanding for the NVQs in Engineering Level 3. It’s a valuable alternative if you don’t have access to the NVQ.

Course content
You’ll need a keen interest in engineering and in developing your practical and analytical skills, as well as being fully committed to attendance and self-motivated enough to continue your studies and coursework during your own time.
The course itself consists of projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, and the topics you’ll cover include:
- Engineering Health & Safety
- Engineering principles
- Principles of mechanical manufacturing engineering
- Maintenance of pneumatic systems
- Maintenance of hydraulic systems
- Maintenance of Machine systems
or
- Machining materials by turning
- Machining materials by Milling
- CNC Machining of components
You’ll also develop essential employability skills including:
- Self-management
- Team working
- Business awareness and customer awareness
- Problem solving
- Communication
- Basic literacy and numeracy
- A positive attitude to work
You’ll be assessed through exams, coursework, assignments, practical assessment and portfolio work before being awarded the City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical/Manufacturing) Technology, after which you could move on to a suitable Apprenticeship or employment as a mechanical or manufacturing technician – or if you’ve taken advanced mathematics and science as an optional unit within the qualification could progress to a higher level qualification (e.g. HNC).
Entry Requirements
You’ll need to already have completed Level 2 Diploma in Engineering with a Merit.
Additional information
If you’re following a formal Apprenticeship you may have to attend an additional course to complete the essential skills needed. You’ll also need to provide your own Personal Protective Equipment (steel toe cap boots and fire retardant overalls) and supply your own stationery e.g. folders, subject dividers, pens, pencils, colouring pencils, compass, ruler and scientific calculator.
After booking your course you have 14 days to change your mind and request a full refund. You can still request a refund after this date, but this will only be given if you meet the criteria from the college fee policy.
If your chosen course starts within 14 days of you booking your place, then the 14 day refund policy does not apply and any refund will be subject to the college fee policy.
