In a nutshell

This practical course offers an excellent introduction to mechanical engineering. You will learn the practical skills and knowledge needed to work in mechanical manufacturing.

It is designed to lead directly into the level 2 diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or an apprenticeship.

... you want a career or apprenticeship in engineering and manufacturing.

What will I be doing?

You will study a range of modules including:

  • Working in engineering
  • Machining engineering materials
  • Making components using hand tools and fitting techniques
  • Maths and science
  • Computer aided design and manufacture

You will complete a mixture of assessments including:

  • workshop practical assessments
  • short theory assessments
  • online multiple choice tests

You will also develop your Maths, English and employability skills.

If you don't already have a grade C in Maths and/or English GCSEs, you can retake these.

What is expected of me?

To enrol you’ll need a minimum of 4 GCSEs grade E or above, to include Maths and English (or Welsh as a first language)

Full commitment to attendance is required, as is the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You should also have a strong desire to work in the engineering industry, abide by the college ethos and be willing to participate in improving your level of academic subjects.

What comes next?

This course is designed for progression to a Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Technology.

Additional information

You’ll need Personal Protective Equipment, such as boots and overalls, the cost of which is approximately £40 You’ll also need to supply your own stationery and folders.
