Entry Requirements
You should have completed and passed the Riding Skill Development – Basic Preparation for BHS Stage 2 course, the BHS Stage 2 exam or have equivalent skills.
In a nutshell
To progress your riding skills and knowledge of horse care beyond BHS Stage 2, this course prepares you for the BHS Stage 3 qualification and covers a range of practical and theoretical topics.

What will I be doing?
Continuing on from Riding Skill Development Stage 2, this course takes place at Usk equestrian centre (a British Horse Society (BHS) approved exam centre) with:
Each session includes a riding lesson covering:
Flat Riding
- Maintaining horses with the correct way of going on the flat
- How to assess horses
Jumping
- Show jumping around a course of fences set up to 1m
- Cross country over solid fences up to 90cm
Lunging
- Lunging to effectively exercise
Horse Care
- Caring for competition horses
- Knowledge of conformation and anatomy
- Health and feeding requirements for a variety of horses.
You’ll need to provide your own riding hat and body protector to current BHS standards, jodhpurs and boots. The course carries no formal qualifications, but prepares you for the BHS Stage 3 assessment – after which, you can progress to BHS Stage 4.
What is expected of me?
The BHS Stage 3 is an externally set assessment.
What comes next?
Progress to BHS Stage 4.

The course will run on a Monday and Wednesday 6.00pm – 9.00pm for a period of 5 weeks.
After booking your course you have 14 days to change your mind and request a full refund. You can still request a refund after this date, but this will only be given if you meet the criteria from the college fee policy.
If your chosen course starts within 14 days of you booking your place, then the 14 day refund policy does not apply and any refund will be subject to the college fee policy.
