Always fancied trying ceramics and getting creative with clay?

Get an introduction to basic ceramics with hand-building techniques and working with clay. This short course gives you the opportunity to try your hand at creating your own bespoke pieces.

... you if you're looking for a practical course that provides a basic and engaging introduction to creative ceramics.

Course content

During this course, you’ll gain hands on experience of making your own finished pieces of pottery to take home. You'll build an understanding of the unending possibilities that clay offers as a material and the process required to achieve finished work. This course gives you time and the expertise to be creative using clay and its related decorating materials.

You’ll learn about:

  • The different properties of clay
  • Methods of working with clay and surface decoration techniques
  • Finishing fired pieces

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Creatively explore texture, colour and glaze application on and into the clay surface
  • Make a piece of clay work using rolled sheets of textured clay
  • Produce a finished piece of pinched and coiled clay work decorated with ceramic colour
  • And/or combine the coiling process with a press moulded base made by pushing clay into a ready-made plaster mould.

Attendance and punctuality are essential to get the most out of this course. An interest in ceramics is essential. Most of the sessions will be practical and you will be expected to take part in all parts of the session.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but you'll need an interest in the subject. No prior knowledge of pottery is required to attend, and the course is ideal for beginners to pottery or those who have some basic understanding of ceramic processes.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to understand demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information.

Additional information

Most ceramic materials are covered by the course fee. Any additional charges will be explained by your course tutor. You may want to bring a note pad and pencil for notes and sketching out ideas.
