This is a course that will help you to understand the essential skills needed to acquire a WJEC GCSE English Language qualification.

The course will prepare you for GCSE English Language if you wish to complete this in the future.

This course will cover reading, writing and oracy skills to ensure you understand how each skill would be taught in the GCSE course and will give you experience and knowledge in these areas.

Course content

Through this course, you will enhance and improve your skills in these following areas: reading, writing and speaking and listening.

The course will include the following components:

  • Developing your Reading: this unit will comprise of several reading resources which will be used to develop key skills needed in everyday life such as comprehension, summarising, inference, analysis, and comparison.
  • Developing your Writing: this unit will support you in understanding the various text types you may need to write in the future. We will explore writing for the correct audience and purpose, as well as building literacy through spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Developing your Speaking and Listening: this unit will help you to build your oracy through a range of activities. You will participate in group discussions and understand how to build and develop on your arguments, whilst knowing how to respond to others. You will also be supported in delivering effective and structured presentations.

Entry Requirements

To be considered for this course you need to have a keen interest in English Language, with a desire to complete the qualification in the future.

Additional information

On completion of this course, you can apply to study GCSE English Language at the college on a full-time basis.

However, the primary and most important outcomes of this course will be the development of the key GCSE English Language skills and how you can use these in your everyday life.
