This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 years and over, entry onto this qualification can be via previous achievement of a Level 2 qualification in women's hairdressing and/or a successful skills test and interview.

Initial entrance assessment. You need to be working at Levels 1 or 2 in Literacy. You will be expected to work on realistic clients in a commercial environment and will also be responsible for developing your own 'client base’.

In a nutshell

This Level 2 Certificate in Barbering is the formal industry qualification that develops specific skills for trainee barbers or anyone wanting to enter the barbering industry. You will learn all aspects of basic gent's hairdressing and gain experience within the College commercial salons.

This course is for you if... are self-motivated, hardworking, have a friendly personality and a high level of personal presentation. want to work on realistic clients in a commercial environment and will also be responsible for developing your own 'client base'.

What will I be doing?

The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Barbering is a vocational qualification designed to develop a limited number of barbering skills to a high level of occupational ability and will prepare you to enter the men's hairdressing sector as a unisex hairdresser.

This qualification includes the units to prepare you to work effectively as a junior unisex hairdresser, including: client consultation for hair services, cutting men's hair, cutting facial hair and following health and safety in the salon.

This qualification will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills to enable you to advise and consult with men on the type of hair-cut and facial hair shaping the way they want, but just as importantly what is suitable for them. You will also learn how to work in a safe manner throughout the service protecting both yourself and your clients.

The hairdressing sector is fast-moving and there will be opportunities to learn new skills during and after your training.

What comes next?

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a junior unisex hairdresser. On completion of this qualification you will widen your career opportunities from working as a hairdresser to be able to offer unisex services through a variety of contexts, including:

- Working in a unisex hair salon
- Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare you for employment as a unisex hairdresser, you may choose to develop your skill base further by undertaking specialist qualifications at Level 3.

Additional information

Code of dress:

  • Tunic with black trousers and black shoes must be worn in salons
  • Hair must be neatly tied back off the face
  • Nail extensions & varnish must not be worn
  • No piercings: only a wedding ring is allowed to be worn in the salon

You will be expected to purchase a uniform and barbering kit as a condition of your place on the course. The cost of this is approximately £200.
