In a nutshell
This course will help you develop your welding skills and knowledge to be able to work and produce welded joints in complex positions. It prepares you for undertaking BS EN 287 Welder approval testing by having an acceptance standard based on ISO 5817 – arc welded joints in steel – guidance on quality levels for imperfections.
This course is for...
…anyone wanting to undertake BS EN 287 Welder approval testing.
…experienced welders who need a qualification to progress to complex welding work and quality control.
Course content
The course covers the Metal Active/Inert Gas Shielding (MAGS/MIGS), Manual Metal Arc (MMA), Tungsten Active/Inert Gas Shielding (TAGS/TIGS) or Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) welding processes, and you’ll need to complete a range of fillet and butt welded joints in welding positions such as vertical, over-head and horizontal, using mild steel and stainless steel pipe and plate.
You’ll need to recognise and identify basic welding defects showing how to rectify and prevent any faults that can occur, and to adjust and set the conditions for welding in line with relevant specifications and weld procedures.
You’ll also need to prepare for welding by obtaining the necessary job instructions, materials, tools, equipment and any documentation, and check and inspect the welding equipment to make sure it’s in a safe working condition and suitable for the welding to be undertaken.
On completing this course, you could move on to NVQ Level 3 Fabrication and Welding.
Entry Requirements
You’ll need Level 2 Fabrication & Welding, a minimum of 3 years ' industry experience of the selected welding processes or an interview to assess your skills.
