Former student showcases talent for Eurovision

Well done to our ex-Music Theatre student Rhiannon Porter and the group Goldstone who competed in BBC Eurovision YOU DECIDE for a place in the Eurovision finals last night.

Although Goldstone didn’t get first place, they gave a great live performance of their song ‘I Feel the Love’ against talented competition.

Rhiannon, originally from Blaenavon, studied at Crosskeys Campus and went on to become a professional actress and singer. Goldstone was formed three years ago with Aimie Atkinson and Helen Wint.

Lecturer Cheryl Harper said: “After leaving the course at Coleg Gwent Rhiannon worked on some great shows including Les Miserables 25th Anniversary production. She worked extremely hard and deserved this opportunity to showcase her talent.”

Rhiannon was 19 when she joined the Les Miserables 25th anniversary tour, touring with the show for a year understudying and playing the role of Fantine. She also toured Europe with a show called ‘Musical Starnights’ which showcased the best of the musicals. Her latest role in the theatre work was as understudy to ex-Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm, in the role of ‘Mary Magdalene’ on the UK and Australia tour of Jesus Christ Superstar

Goldstone faced tough competition from five other acts, but it was SuRie who took top spot and will head to Lisbon for the Eurovision Song Contest finals in May.

Fans compared Goldstone to Little Mix and Lady Gaga so watch this space as they look to go far.

Goldstone is the second group from Crosskeys Performing Arts department to be considered for the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2010 Sylvia Strand, then a lecturer with the Musical Theatre course and classically trained opera singer and her husband composed and performed in the Eurovision Song Contest, representing Cyprus, with music student John Lilygreen on lead vocals.
