Coleg Gwent student in the spotlight at UK Skills Show

Kyle Saunders, a Motor Vehicle Body Repair student from Coleg Gwent’s City of Newport Campus will be in the spotlight this week when he competes at The Skills Show held at the NEC in Birmingham.

The 20-year-old from Somerton Park, Newport has already competed in the regional heat to get through to the UK finals at Birmingham and if Kyle is successful there he has a chance to join Team UK in the World Skills in Abu Dhabi in 2017.

Kyle, who is an apprentice with Nationwide Crash Repair Centre in Newport will face six practical tests to demonstrate his skill against his peers from colleges across the UK.

The challenges will include a plastic repair, refinishing a 3 stage pearlescent, a fade out repair on a metallic wing, marking and measuring a design and refinishing a car bonnet.

Head of Motor Vehicle Body Repair, Richard Wheeler said: “It is exciting for Kyle and the college to be part of this competition which has a very positive impact in lots of ways. It takes hard work, determination and a high level of skill to get this far.”
