Coleg Gwent students brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to the Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone recently with a two night sell-out, end of year catwalk show, which raised more than Ł600 for a local children’s charity.
NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing students competed against each other to raise the money for the Noah's Ark Appeal. The students used recycled materials to create a fantastic array of designs. Over the course of two nights they showcased their creations inspired by classic and recent films such as Star Wars, Frozen and Maleficent.
The students’ creations were judged by local salon owner, Dean Poole of Dean’s Hair and Beauty, Oakdale. Categories in the competition were Avant Garde, cut and colour, with prizes being awarded for first, second and third place.
Student, Racheal Johnson said: “The experience of preparing for and taking part in the show was out of this world. As a winner of the Avant Garde category and second place in the cut and colour category, it was the best day ever.”
The show was an entire campus effort with students from music, stage and lighting, catering, art, construction, and media departments all contributing their specialist skills to the production.
NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing lecturer, Mandy Smith said: “The standard of work the students produced was outstanding. Their talent wowed me and the audience and they have learned so much from the experience which they will take into employment in the future.”
