Academic IELTS (ACI) stands for the Academic International English Language Testing System. This examination is recognised by governments, universities and employers as a measure of your formal skills and language ability in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Grammar and lexis is tested in all elements of the exam. IELTS is also often required for entry to universities in the UK, for access to courses such as work-based learning, FE or HE, and for visa requirements for the Home Office. The examination measures skill and therefore is valid for only 2 years from the test date – this is because your skills may improve or deteriorate.

There is an examination every month at our university exam centre in Cardiff University. If you study with us Coleg Gwent will help you book your final examination in June. If you wish to take an examination before this date (or at any other time) you will need to do so as a private candidate directly with the university.

You are also ready to build your skills in all areas of communication. If you are intermediate level, you have a good understanding of language and a reasonable grasp of what to do with it grammatically. You feel confident in some areas, like home and work, but you need to move on to more formal situations. You also need to improve your confidence in grammar – not only how to use a word but why we use it. At upper-intermediate level, you now have the language you need, the grammatical knowledge and the skills to do most of your daily tasks in a variety of situations. However, you may find that some days you can do anything and some days you can’t. You need confidence and skills in applying what you know every time you need them and not just on a good day. Your key challenges this year would be consistency, consolidation and confidence. At advanced level, you are doing extremely well in English. You feel confident in most areas, you are moving up in your career and handling life in the UK with few difficulties at all. However, you don’t quite have the nuance of language to discuss more emotional, psychological, moral, political or philosophical points.

Advanced level training helps you approach and develop skills to handle this higher level of communication and by taking the General English option you can do this with a great deal of flexibility and fun.
