Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to develop your Welsh language skills, we’re here to help all Welsh learners in the Gwent area - whatever your level.  

Gwent is a special area with a rich history of Welsh language and culture. Over the years the college’s Gwent Welsh for Adults Centre has enjoyed huge success in developing Welsh speakers. It’s easy to learn Welsh locally in Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, Torfaen and Monmouthshire.

 

Which course is for me?

Learn at the right level for you and follow a clear progression route from absolute beginners to advanced level Welsh.




Ways to studyFast Track (4 hours a week)For those who want to learn quickly, these popular courses offer fast progress and more contact with the language to boost confidence.

Once a Week Classes (2 hours a week)Learn at a slower place once a week with the option of supplementing your progress with our day schools and weekend courses.

OnlineYou can choose to study any of our Welsh courses online via Skype free video calls.

 

Course levelsMynediad/Entry / Mynediad Fast TrackThis introduction to Welsh is fairly relaxed course, where the emphases is very much on conversational Welsh. By the end of this level, you should be able to hold everyday conversations in Welsh and discuss: personal details, events in the past, needs and likes, commands, future events, time and money.

Sylfaen/Foundation / Sylfaen Fast TrackYou will expand on your speaking skills and should feel comfortable discussing everyday topics such as the family, work and hobbies after completing this level.

The emphasis is on speaking the language but you also get the opportunity to do some reading and writing. This level is suitable for learners who have finished Cwrs Mynediad / Entry (WJEC) or who are on a similar level.

Canolradd/IntermediateThe aim of this level is to get as much speaking practice as possible, but some listening, reading and writing work is introduced.

After completing this level you should have the confidence to discuss everyday activities.

Your listening and reading skills will also develop, and you should be able to write letters and complete forms confidently.

This course is suitable for learners who have finished Foundation level (WJEC) or who are on a similar level.

Uwch/HigherFollowing the completion of this level, learners should have the complete confidence in their conversational and written skills.

Learners are given an opportunity to discuss wider issues other than everyday topics, and are encouraged to watch Welsh television programmes and listen to Radio radio.

This course is suitable for learners who have finished Intermediate level (WJEC) or who are on a similar level.

Hydedredd/ProficiencyAt this level each Proficiency class will have different needs. But the overall goal is to further develop existing skills of learners in order to transition from learner, to the world of Welsh speakers.

In order to do activities that will meet the specific needs of the group there is a strong emphasis on the flexibility of the course and because of this the lesson content is specifically adapted and specialized for the group. A wide range of resources are used to meet the demands of the class.

 

How do I enrol? There are 3 options for you to enrol on one of our Coleg Gwent, Workplace or Family Welsh for Adults Courses:
1) Phone the Centre on 01495 333710. Our staff will take your details and the course fee processed by debit / credit card. A form will be given to you at you first class to check and sign.

2) Visit the Centre in person. You’ll be asked to complete an enrolment form and pay by cheque or debit / credit card.

3) Enrol in your first class. Please complete ALL parts of the enrolment form, sign it and submit it to the Centre / tutor. When the Centre receives your enrolment form an invoice will be sent to you.
