Coleg Gwent has proved to be amongst the best further education colleges in Wales in the latest inspection by Estyn [Her Majesty’s inspectorate in Wales].
In its inspection, the College’s current performance was judged as at least Good in every aspect of its work and its prospects for even further improvement also judged to be Good. This matches the best performance by any further education college in Wales so far under the current framework of inspections.
The College was judged as at least Good in 9 out of 10 aspects of its performance, and Excellent in the other.
The inspection highlighted many strengths including good outcomes for A Levels, vocational programmes, and the Welsh Baccalaureate. The fact that learners from areas of high deprivation perform as well as others, they feel safe and well cared for, and are provided with good guidance and support are also highlighted as key features. Learners are also very satisfied with their experience at the College and say so; Estyn commented that the responses to their own questionnaire were some of the best they had seen anywhere.
Estyn inspectors stated that: “Overall, the rates at which learners complete and attain their qualifications are good. Success rates at all levels, in all learning areas and at all college campuses have shown a steady upward trend over the last three years. The College compares well with other colleges in Wales when ranked on their success rates for all courses. Overall, the College plans the curriculum effectively and meets the needs of learners, employers and the community well.”
The College was judged to have excellent partnership arrangements with a wide range of key stakeholders. The Estyn Report states that: “The College has developed excellent partnership arrangements with the local community and the businesses that it serves. These partnerships are based on mutual trust and co-operation.”
Principal/Chief Executive of Coleg Gwent, Jim Bennett said: “This is a fantastic outcome for the College. It demonstrates the hard work all staff in the College put in to give our students a really good experience, supporting them to gain high success rates in their qualifications. The report fully substantiates all we have been saying about the College over the past few years, and shows we are well on the way to achieving our long term vision.
“I am particularly pleased that the report has highlighted our excellent partnership work, especially in Blaenau Gwent where we are about to embark on a very exciting new model for post 16 education.
“The report also shows we know what we need to do to improve further, and that’s what we will do.”
